The Londis Group needs
no introduction. Synonymous with convenience store retailing, a
Londis-branded store is in easy reach of the majority of the UK
population. Multitudes of independent franchise operators own one
or more outlets. With out-of-town expansion no longer an option,
the continued growth of large corporations has switched attention
to town centre and neighbourhood sites. Despite being ideally located,
Londis Copthorne was under-performing. A new owner and a new trading
concept was required.
Convenient is defined as “suitable, easily
accessible, not troublesome.” In the fight to attract customers,
each local branch must perform. If a must-have item is not in stock,
the customer may defect. If the checkout is running too slow, the
customer may defect. In densely populated areas there is a shop
to the north, south, east and west, all within ten minutes by car.
At Copthorne, the obsolete cash register and numerous counter-top
devices for a multitude of different functions was simply an inhibitor.
