The UK rail network has seen the introduction of the first fleet of trains since the days of steam. Virgin Pendolinos are a totally new type of train with revolutionary new features. Part of the package is a different approach to passengers. Stale old sandwiches and stewed tea are a thing of the past. Customers have access to a range of refreshments and merchandise both at-seat, or from the on-board shop. Leading improvement of the travel experience with more than 1,600 journeys a week.

In this ambitious project with £ Billions of investment at stake, Virgin was intent on making a real difference. Stringent Rail Operating Standards governed every aspect. Even the smallest, most insignificant components had to comply. To deliver this paradigm shift in train service, Virgin needed a software application in line with the innovation demanded, the governing standards enforced and the fail safe performance demanded in this most complex world of logistics.

 
 

 

Virgin searched the market, considered all the possibilities and selected Epsilon software as the only viable transaction processing engine. A single code base operates on fixed touchscreen terminals and mobile devices. While some special developments were required, the fully-fledged feature set fully tested in the marketplace in usual configurations ensured that the project was delivered to timetable and to budget. Evidently simple, the Epsilon package is very sophisticated. It even synchronises mobiles if they land on the wrong train.

Transactions are performed beyond the boundaries of real estate. The constraints of conventional EPoS are removed in this truly ‘small format' retailing environment. Interactive sales information ensures that the right product mix is always available to passengers. Wastage is kept to a minimum. The team at Virgin have a platform to manage the introduction of new ideas and enticing new offers. Virgin promised a new beginning and Virgin is delivering with a little help from Epsilon.
